Tips From 2019 Star Award Winner
Ambulance Victoria, winners of the 2019 Star Award for their Analytics Uplift Project answered some questions for us about their experience with the CAA Awards for Excellence.
Tony Walker - CEO Ambulance Victoria
Ambulance Victoria has a strong history of success in the CAA Awards for Excellence. Why do you continue to enter the CAA Awards?
At Ambulance Victoria (AV) we are committed to continuous improvement, strong leadership, and innovation. Project work, performance improvement, and quality assurance are all incorporated throughout our organisation and our strategic plans, and our drive for significant achievements and progress enable us to evolve and adapt to the changing demand.
The CAA Awards provide us with an opportunity to showcase and celebrate these achievements. Our staff can be recognised for the important work they do within Ambulance Victoria. As an industry platform, the CAA Awards provide an opportunity for learning, inspiration, and collaboration.
Do you have any tips on how Ambulance Victoria prepares for the CAA Awards?
We engage our Executive team to look at which AV activities and programs would be a good fit for the award categories. Our Strategic Communication and Engagement team coordinates the entries to nominate an exceptional project, quality or performance from all areas of the organisation.
The CAA Women in Ambulance nominations, for instance, were sought from our Executive Directors and their teams by sharing the CAA brief, discussing the entries and reviewing all nominees.
How do you decide and select which projects/programs to enter?
AV carefully considers our current initiatives with a focus on topics that are most likely to engage the ambulance sector. We focus on award categories that align well with our current projects and we seek to highlight excellence and innovation in the operational improvement, education, capability or corporate management space.
We know that AV enters a number of different awards, and we would love to know what you like about the CAA Awards?
We like the fact that the CAA industry-based awards invite evidence-based projects in areas of contemporary relevance to AV which have the potential to transfer results and learnings across the ambulance sector.
Participation in these awards support recognition of excellence in our people and provides collaboration across Australasian ambulance services. We appreciate the support that the CAA Awards provide to member ambulance services and our work in the pre-hospital setting.
How do you promote the CAA Awards and your wins across the service and to the public?
Our media team who sits within the Strategic Communication and Engagement unit, does a lot of work around ensuring the awards and results are promoted across the organisation and to the public.
The awards, finalists, and results are all promoted on our intranet portal, Workplace (internal facebook) and CEO communiques to reach all our AV staff. We use social media and the AV website to share results from awards with the wider public.
Looking at the 2019 CAA Star Award Winner – Analytics Uplift project – did you know this one was a winner?
AV was very proud of all our nominations in the 2019 CAA awards and we are very proud to have won the Star award in 2019.
The Analytics Uplift Project concept was a winner in our eyes because it responded to an identified gap in previous reporting functions, enhancing our capability across a suite of critical exception and benchmark reports. The enhanced reporting and analytics functions of the project were exciting in enabling meaningful insights around data to support operational performance and improve clinical outcomes.
The work from this project underpins our strategic plan of upholding our goal of delivering outstanding healthcare every time – now better supported by improved data governance.
